Glacier and Wildlife Tour
Prepare for a Great Trip!
Prepare for a Great trip! We think that the best way to enjoy the flight is to think of questions for your pilot. The Rust's pilots know a lot about Alaska and the area they fly over. The microphones are voice activated and work when they are almost touching your lips. You will get a more personalized tour if you ask questions!
You will be in a plane for more than an hour and half total so we recommend using the toilet before the tour. Rust's toilets located in the hanger building, the red doors across from the office.
Remember to charge your camera batteries and ensure that you have enough video. We do have tips on taking photos from planes in the FAQ section. It's best to dress in layers; the planes are heated and can get quite warm from solar heat in the summer. Flat heeled, sturdy shoes are best since you will be climbing in and out of a plane. Strap cameras and valuables to yourself before getting in and out of planes. Pilots don't dive for items dropped in the lake. There is an additional option (for an additional cost) to make a stop on the tour. It's fun and helps to stretch your legs on this extended plane ride. The pilot picks the stop based on time of year, weather and scenic possibilities. It's ok to bring a non messy, non smelly snack with you. It's also optional to tip the pilot.

Glacier & Wildlife Flightseeing Tour: An Alaskan Glacier & Wildlife Adventure
Take a Knik Glacier tour and experience a glacier and wildlife adventure. Soar over towering Knik Glacier - the centerpiece of Lake George National Natural Landmark. At 25 miles long and 5 miles wide, Knik Glacier is one of Southcentral Alaska’s biggest and most spectacular glaciers and towers above Knik River Valley – an area rich in vegetation, fish and Alaska wildlife.
On the north side of the Knik River, sunny, south-facing slopes are common lambing areas for Dall sheep. Moose are plentiful year round. Black and grizzly bear, wolf, coyote, fox, lynx, wolverine, snowshoe hare, American beaver, the Arctic ground squirrel and the occasional river otter may also be spotted. (This is our Marketing Director's favorite flightsee trip. It's also a great value.)
Flight Pattern
On this hour and 1/2 Knik Glacier flightseeing tour with Rust’s Flying Service, we depart from the world’s busiest seaplane base for the expansive Knik Glacier, located 50 miles north of Anchorage, Alaska. We also fly over Colony Glacier to Lake George, which spills into the winding Knik Glacier Gorge. The extended tour at 2 and one quarter hours includes a lake landing for photos.
Highlights of the Knik Glacier Flightseeing Adventure:
- Soar over the Chugach Mountains and the expansive Knik Glacier rimmed with spectacular hanging glaciers
- Sense the motion of the ice and see how it has shaped the Alaska landscape
- Spot mountain goat and Dall sheep at high elevations
- Watch for black and grizzly bear, wolf, coyote, fox and other Alaska wildlife
- Descend for a low moose-spotting flyby over Knik River
A little bit of trivia: In 1991 Paramount used Knik Glacier to film a portion of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Knik Glacier was the setting for a scene in which Capt. Kirk and Dr. McCoy are rescued from the Klingon Ice Planet Prison Rura Penthe. (source: Wikipedia)
